The Enron Story & Its Lessons
The
sudden collapse of the Enron Company the 7th
largest company in America and one of the largest
energy companies in the world, is certainly one of
the greatest financial collapses the world has seen
and should teach several lessons to investors.
Financial institutions and agencies, investment
bankers, lawyers, politicians, the Justice
Department, official Washington, Wall Street and
the media are all currently circling and
positioning themselves in the expectation of
finding one of the greatest financial and political
scandals of the new century.
The first lesson
is that large corporations, .... Click

Intellectual Property Business & Investments in
the News
2001 was
another good year for Intellectual property filings
and registrations. The U.S. Patent & Trademark
office had 344,700 patent applications filed in
2001 representing a 15% increase over year 2000 and
another in a long consecutive string of yearly
increases in filings. Approximately 187,800 patents
were granted in 2001, representing a 3% increase
over year 2000.
The importance
and recognition of Intellectual Property (I.P.) in
modern global business and investments is
increasingly being touted. Recent news reports
covering activities of noted "Bowie
Bond"
entrepreneur David Pullman, and small business and
franchise attorney Andrew Sherman among others have
fanned this movement.
Pullman
who invented the technique of using the
intellectual property holdings in the music of
David Bowie, James Brown and others as the basis of
bond offerings , announced plans to continue this
trend into other areas of intellectual properties
such for authors and others with significant I.P.
holdings. These bond offerings allows the holders
of the I.P. s to liquidate the value of their
holdings with the added advantage of minimum tax
consequences due to the debt nature of the bond
offerings. Pullman claims that his focus on
Intellectual Property investing has led to many
imitators who now see the light due to his
leadership in the area. His Pullman Group is now in
a lawsuit
against prudential
securities
over some of these issues.
Sherman
who has championed the movement in small business
and franchise investments has also spoken about the
harnessing and value of intellectual property being
the most important element and trend in modern
business.
Self
Controlled and Directed Investing in the
News
A new book "Investor
Politics"
by the Templeton Foundation Press is making the
rounds. The book speaks about the rise in self
controlled and directed investing and how investors
must take control of their business and investments
themselves or otherwise end up being the pawns of
those who take the time to understand and exercise
the business of direct investing.

Government Misspending & Investment Benefits
Government Contractors.
The
Boeing corporation has benefited recently by
leasing planes to the U.S. government to be used as
refueling tankers and congressional and government
transport planes. It is reported that the leasing
of these planes rather than the outright purchase
will cause American taxpayers a tremendous premium.
However U.S. government sources claim that the
lease arrangements were necessary because the money
was not available to buy the planes outright.
Critics claim that the lease arrangements were
exceptionally bad deals for the government
especially since Boeing will retain ownership and
possession of the planes and be able to eventually
sell them to the Government realizing extra profits
for Boeing and additional costs to the taxpayers.
The importance of this story is not only that
Governments can be notoriously bad in their
investment choices, but that entrepreneurs who are
in the right place at the right time can make huge
profits by doing business with government
contracts.

The
markets have been closed for a historic 4 days this
week due to the terrorist Attack on the U.S. The
terrorists attacks are already having far flung
consequences around the world and it appears that
these effects will be with us for awhile. For those
whose business relates directly to investments and
the stock markets this attack has the added
significance of having been directed right at the
heart of the world's financial center.

New
SEC Rules on Market Center
Disclosures
|
By
Steve Deveaux....NASD Reg. Rep. & Financial
Analyst
The
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will adopt
two new rules which will begin to be phased in on
Monday, April 2, 2001, and which should
significantly help investors/ traders and increase
market transparency These rules are especially
important for those involved with self directed,
self controlled investment systems"
The SEC
rules are as follows:
"Under
Rule 11Ac1-5, market centers that trade
national market system securities will be required
to make monthly, electronic disclosures of basic
information concerning their quality of executions
on a stock-by-stock basis. Such information will
include, for example, how market orders of various
sizes are executed relative to the public quotes.
Also, for the first time, investors will be
informed not just about quoted spreads, but also
about effective spreads - the spreads actually paid
by investors whose orders are routed to a
particular market center. In addition, market
centers will disclose the extent to which they
provide executions at prices better than the public
quotes to investors using limit orders."
